The new term

It is the start of the new term, and as usual the holiday did not seem long enough. I have completed my website design assignment but I was uncertain upon what I was supposed to be writing about. It is far from being perfect and unfortunately I can not credit it as an assignment I am proud of.

I am starting to get back into the rhyme of the term but I wish I had more time in the evenings to visit my university friends before their holidays end.

It is the Christmas holidays and I am currently enjoying meeting up with all my friends. Most of my friends decided to go to university in September 2006. This has meant that I have been unable to talk to them probably for three months. I am surprised how little they have changed in the period they have been away and we still get on really well. However I have found that the only way I wish to spend my holiday is in socializing, this is all very well but I still have an assignment to write, Christmas shopping and family events.

The last week of term! I am genuinely excited about the Christmas holidays as I am looking forward to seeing all my friends that have been at university since September and I am also looking forward to the return of my big brother, who has also been attending university.

I am all prepared for Christmas as I have decorated the living room and bought all my presents. I was looking forward to a relaxed holiday; however we have just been given an assignment to do over the holidays that has a deadline of the first week back after the holidays. However I plan to try and do the majority of it before the holidays start so that I have more time to enjoy myself.

Feeling really tired this week and this are going wrong. On Tuesday my bike chain slipped, not realizing this as I am not mechanically minded I had to push my bike to college for about two and a half miles in the rain and wind and of course I was also late.

I am also having problems with my classes, my work will not save and my program had an unbelievable 98 errors! We also had spot tests that gave me a bit of a shock as I could not remember everything covered in the term or how to explain what we do on the computers in words.

PowerPoint Disaster!

This has been an unsatisfactory day. My task was to complete a PowerPoint presentation about vegetables. I have allocated a long time to this task, in preparing the information needed and trying to make the presentation look exciting. However having not been taught how to produce a spectacular looking presentation, I was therefore unable to achieve the quality that was expected of me. I tried to do the task to the fullest extent of my knowledge, but in truth I do not yet know all the functions that are available to me while using this software.

I am currently experimenting with different web tools freely available upon the internet. I have started to experiment with Sitekreator. This is a program that allows you to create your own websites and publish them upon the net. After the introductory window, very little information about how to use the program is available. However with a bit of experimenting you can generally work out how to use the different function of the website designer. I have found that the last week has led me to be rather concerned. I know that many assignments are on their way but I hoped that they would be fairly spread out, but now I am not sure if they will be. I was told that I would have six assignments before Christmas and at the moment I have only received one. This means that potentially I could have to do five assignments to complete in around a month. This makes me a little anxious that I may not have enough time to complete all the assignments to the highest standard possible.

First assignment

I have got my first assignment for my computer course. This is for software installation and it involves extensive research into software licenses, software piracy and the registration of software. At first it seemed a daunting task as I have no information about these areas. However after doing the research I feel that I will be able to tackle this task. I started by trying to interpret the exact information that the question requires. After that I planned my answer and wrote out the answer in rough. I then started typing it up and making alterations where needed. The work is now checked and ready to be looked at by my software installation teacher. I am a bit concerned about the outcome as I know so little about computing but I feel a lot is expected of me due to academic results in the past. It makes me feel a little pressured.

Trip to Kos!

I have been asked to produce a plan for a trip to Greece. To do this I need to know the essential details, such as dates, time period, location, type of accommodation and extras. After discovering this information I looked up the availability of the requests on the internet, for example the flight times for the given dates and car hire. I copied and pasted this information so that it was easier to sort out. After this I organized the information into an itinerary of information. I was also asked to produce a business letter and PowerPoint about Greece alongside this. I found that it is difficult to remember the exact structure of a business letter but I enjoyed writing it. I also enjoyed writing the PowerPoint as I learnt a lot about the Greek islands while producing it. I was also introduced to Morguefile which holds spectacular photos.

Just before half term!

This has been a rather unorthodox week! It has been confusing as everyone is saying something different and lessons have been canceled. Today I begrudged waking up at the early time of 7:15 and coming in for rather a mixed day. The first lesson was on but I did not know if I have to re-register for enrichment, which meant hours to wait!

This half term I have enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere at college but this may change as the assignments come in. I have learnt a lot about computing this term, many of the basics I was lacking before this course. I have found it difficult to get my head around the computer language of C++. However I am starting to have a better understanding of it. Something I can not understand is why I always seem to have a problem with computers. If anyone is going to have a issue with the computers it is usually me! However overall I have had a good and informative experience!

What have I learnt so far?

I have found this course has been extremely useful in adding to my limited computer knowledge. I have extended my basic skills upon windows software, an example being that I have learnt how to crop and enlarge pictures on PowerPoint without loosing the quality. The course has also refreshed skills that have been forgotten, such as how to use formulas on Excel. I have also learnt about programming and how to install software, areas of which I have had no previous knowledge before this course.

I have now been at college for four weeks and I have found that the time has passed very quickly. I still feel in the fresher mood, where experiences are all new and different, especially as I have hardly touched computers until this course (well only when doing coursework). I found this course difficult as I am new to using the computers. However generally I am happy, especially as on this course I am allowed a day off! I also enjoy the relaxed atmosphere that presently resides but this may change as timing becomes more pressured. The only criticism I would have about the course is that when a tutor is away, there is often no cover teacher available and no cover work is set. This always feels like a waste of time and energy as we are not told before hand about the cancellations of classes and we therfore have little to do until the next lesson.

My Plan

I am planning to go to university after my gap year at college. Presently I am considering a history course at York but Durham, Exeter, UCL and Sheffield are also possibilities. I have already obtained the necessary qualifications needed to enter next year but I feel it is important to gain an extra qualification in ICT, as my previous knowledge is very limited and experience will help me at university and beyond. I have already obtained my G.C.S.E'S and A Levels in History, Geography, Art and General Studies. I also have an AS in Biology. I play the clarinet and have passed my grade seven and I am also fond of dancing and have achieved my grade 5.I have also taken part in work experience helping me to understand responsibilities within the work place. I was also a prefect and took part in registration duty. My main focus for this year is to obtain an acceptable grade for IT, but alongside this I intend to continue with my interests in music and dance, learn how to cook for university, take part in a first aid course, do some voluntary work, get a part time job and join Archeological dig. My short term/immediate targets are to: Complete all assignments and classes. Complete my UCAS form. I feel that I may need some extra help in my I.T. course as I have very little previous experience and many of my fellow class mates appear to have completed G.C.S.E .I.T. or use the computer a lot at home. This makes me feel that I maybe a little behind experience wise. I am assured that I can obtain help from my subject tutors and from the student support or Connections if I need more general advice. I feel it is partly up to me to check my progress but I am certain that my subject teachers will also be doing so.

Hi, welcome to my blog.
My name is Charlotte and here's a little bit about me. I live in Luton, Bedfordshire, England, commonly known as one of the most stimulating areas in the UK, winning the prize for one of the worst towns in the country. Well, it is not that bad but I can think of better places to be. I have two brothers and a sister who I will always be forever proud of. My sister went to Oxford University and my older brother is at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. My little brother is very lazy but appears to be more intelligent than the rest of us and is full of charm and spirit. Here is a few things about me. My ambition is to go to university (hopefully York) and to study history. After this I am uncertain about what to do but I like the sound of doing research for historical educational programs. I have chosen to do a course in computing as my I.T. education is very limited and I feel it is vital to increase my knowledge for university and my career beyond. Here are a few of my likes and dislikes:
I really enjoy reading, cycling, arts and crafts, going out with my friends, playing the clarinet, dancing, walking and chocolate.
I dislike people who are patronizing and make false accusations.
